The Hardness Distribution of Gamma-Ray Bursts
It is often stated that gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have typical energies of several hundreds keV, where the typical energy may be characterized by the hardness H, the photon energy corresponding to the peak of νFν . Among the 54 BATSE bursts analyzed by Band et al. (1993), and 156 analyzed by us, more then 60% have 50keV < H < 300keV. Is the narrow range of H a real feature of GRBs or is it due to...
متن کاملThe Energy Distribution of Gamma-Ray Bursts
The distribution of the apparent total energy emitted by a gamma-ray burst reflects not only the distribution of the energy actually released by the burst engine, but also the distribution of beaming angles. Using the observed energy fluences, the detection thresholds and burst redshifts for three burst samples, I calculate the best-fit parameters for lognormal and power-law distributions of th...
متن کاملAnisotropy of the sky distribution of gamma-ray bursts
The isotropy of gamma-ray bursts collected in current BATSE catalog is studied. It is shown that the quadrupole term being proportional to ∼ sin 2b sin l is non-zero with a probability of 99.9%. The occurrence of this anisotropy term is then confirmed by the binomial test even with the probability of 99.97 %. Hence, the sky distribution of all known gamma-ray bursts is anisotropic. It is also a...
متن کاملFurther Study of the Gamma-Ray Bursts Duration Distribution
Two classes of gamma-ray bursts have been identified so far, characterized by durations shorter and longer than approximately 2 seconds. In 1998 two independent papers indicated the existence of the third class of the bursts roughly duration between 2 and 10 seconds. In this paper, using the full BATSE Catalog, the maximum likelihood estimation is presented, which gives a 0.5% probability to ha...
متن کاملOn the Bimodal Distribution of Gamma-Ray Bursts
Kouveliotou et al. (1993) recently confirmed that gamma-ray bursts are bimodal in duration. In this paper we compute the statistical properties of the short (≤ 2 s) and long (> 2 s) bursts using a method of analysis that makes no assumption regarding the location of the bursts, whether in the Galaxy or at a cosmological distance. We find the 64 ms channel on BATSE to be more sensitive to short ...
